The Castillon's
Horse
These little horses that roam the Ariége's mountain
pastures.
Their colour his black with the pangar or mealy genetic characteristic, meaning that their coats are lighty mottled at the flancs and belly with a
lighter coloured muzzle, locally called "a foxes muzzle"; or they are bay coloured with similar
markings.
The Castillon horse breed merits a closer look and should be encouraged since it is
endangered.
In bygone days farm horse or domestic horse, it served as a plow horse, as a cart horse or packhorse. This explains the
horse'hardiness, love of work and its reputation as a good work horse.
Nowadays, it remains a versatile horse, serving two main purposes, either as a harness horse or a mount.
It also shows itself to be a formidable riding horse for all types of recreational equitation.
The fifteenth Annual Breeders Show of the Castillon horse will take place at Castillon en Couserans at Saturday 26 august at 14h00, the
ancient breeding grounds of this rare horses are still out to pasture for this summer.
This is a fine opportunity to meet horse breeders and to get to know and appreciate the finer qualities of our horses
